How to Get from Muang Khua to Luang Prabang

When traveling abroad, you may not know how to move from a destination to another, especially when they are far from each other. If you choose a mean of transport that is suitable with your budget, your traveling style, even your health condition, you will have an unforgettable trip in your life and vice versa. 1. By Boat then By Bus
Because of a dam under construction, it is no longer possible to travel along the Nam Ou River to Luang Prabang and you can only get from Muong Khua to Nong Khiaw by boat. However, the sceneries along the river bank are worth your try. It will take you through lush green tropical forests and beautiful mountains that cast reflections in the still river water.
It takes 5 – 6 hours to travel from Muong Khua to Nong Khiaw by boat and you may have to spend about $15 per person buying tickets which can be booked in the morning of the journey at Muong Khua. The boat leaves every morning at 9 am.
When reaching Nong Khiaw, you will stay here overnight since the bus from here to Luang Prabang leaves at 9 am and 11 am. The price for the bus tickets is around US $6 and it takes 3 – 4 hours to get to Luang Prabang.
When traveling by boat from Muong Khua, you should come over Muong Ngoi before arriving in Nong Khiaw and stay here for one day or more to explore the beauty of this village. It is famous for tracks through jungles and natural beauty of rice fields, caves, and water falls. Then, you can get to Nong Khiaw by boat which leaves at 9.30 am and it only takes you an hour.
2. By Private Car
The most comfortable way to reach Luang Prabang from Muang Khua is by a private car as you will not be crammed as traveling by bus, especially at the peak of the season. In addition, you can stop at any place to take photos and your questions about things along the road may be answered by the driver.
The fare is quite high, around US$100 but you can easily share it with your friends and it takes you 5 hours to get to Luang Prabang. You can have your guesthouse or hotel to hire the car for you.
3. By Bus
The bad news is that there is no direct bus from Muang Khua to Luang Prabang. Thus, you first have to catch a bus from Muang Khua to Oudomxay. Since the distance is about 100 kilometers, the journey lasts 2 hours. Moreover, buses here often depart at 8.30 am, 12 am, and 3 pm and you have to spend 35,000 Kips (about US $ 4.5) on the tickets which can be bought at the bus station.
After arriving in Oudomxay, you will have to take another bus to continue your journey to Luang Prabang. Buses leave at 9 am, 12 am, and 3 pm and you will reach Luang Prabang after 4 hours. At bus station, tickets can be bought at 45,000 Kips (about US $5.5).
In conclusion, each way will be an interesting trip since you will have opportunity to see villages and landscapes along the road or the river bank. Nonetheless, you should consider many things like your financial condition or your health to decide which mean of transport is the best for your trip.
