Because waterfalls are abundant throughout Laos, your tours to this Southeast Asian country cannot be complete without seeing some of superb streams of water falling over steep cliff. Being one of the top waterfalls in Laos for adventurers, 100 waterfalls in Nong Khiaw is an ideal place for a jungle hike through a trail of cascading waterfalls and local village. If one day you have intention of visiting this place, information below will be helpful for you.
HOW TO GET THERE
If you are in Nong Khiaw, the best way to reach this waterfall is to take a boat ride along the Nam Ou River, then stop at the nearest village and trek to the waterfall. The journey on the river which lasts in an hour offers you a chance to view beautiful scenes along the way such as shear limestone cliffs or small huts in remote field of rice.
WHAT TO DO
From the village, it is nearly an hour of walking to the base of the waterfalls which was first explored in October, 2008. With no leeches in the falls and the rocks having a relatively good grip, you can walk, scramble, or climb up one waterfall to the next. However, there are also some dicey parts but do not be too worried as some jury-rigged ladders and ropes have been installed at certain points to facilitate things. The fresh water and the shade of the surrounding jungle may provide you with relief against the heat of the day. With the constantly changing scenery and the excitement of walking through a long waterfall, you will find time fly by.
At the top, you will be surprised at the spectacular view of the surrounding countryside and even the whole of Nong Khiaw. You can have lunch here while enjoying the breathtaking scenery.
There is a small trail on the top of 100 waterfalls which will lead you back down to the valley. When hiking back to the village, you will have more opportunities to meet local people and see the daily life here in the Nam Ou Riverside before coming back to Nong Khiaw by boat.
First, this is an adventurous excursion involving a full day of walking so you will need to have a good level of fitness. Second, climbing in the wet season is not advisable because of the muddy condition. Besides, good footwear like trekking sandals is highly recommended due to the slippery route in several places. You should bring outdoor clothing as well. Nevertheless, it can get very cold in the evening in north Laos so a jacket for the way back is very necessary. Last but not least, costs of trek decrease considerably with additional people.
In conclusion, a hike at 100 waterfalls will make you feel like you are beating a path to a treasure. Climbing up the falls with your friends or family members may become good remembrance in your life. Moreover, the stunning view at the summit of the falls is a great reward for your effort. Tuck your fears aside and explore this destination because it is worth it.
